This is the "pushing" or "pulling" part of the movement. When you press up in a push-up, that's the concentric phase. Your muscle fibers shorten to produce the force needed to move. Concentric strength is what people typically think of as "strength." Training the concentric phase with controlled speed builds explosive power and muscle activation.
