In a front lever, your body weight creates torque at the shoulders. The farther your feet are from the shoulders, the greater the torque. To hold the lever, your lats and core must generate enough counter-torque. This is why tucks are easier—they reduce the lever arm and therefore the torque. Understanding torque helps you appreciate why progression steps exist.
